In 2013 I assumed the role of founding editor of the Journal of the International Qur’anic Studies Association, IQSA’s peer-reviewed flagship journal. In 2016 Vanessa De Gifis joined me as co-editor, and together we produced the first two annual volumes of the journal, Volume 1 in 2017 and Volume 2 in 2018. The journal is published by Lockwood Press, and currently being edited by Nicolai Sinai.
In 2016, in conjunction with my work as coordinator of the Mizan initiative at Boston University, I also served as Head Editor of the peer-reviewed, open access Mizan: Journal for the Study of Islamic Societies and Civilizations. Under my leadership three volumes of the journal were produced, available online here:
Volume 1: The Islamic State in Historical and Comparative Perspective (2016)
Given Mizan’s mandate to deploy scholarly expertise to illuminate events and phenomena pertaining to Islamic cultures, communities, and traditions—especially through analysis that provides historical context and fosters comparative inquiry—it has seemed particularly appropriate to devote our first issue to the subject of The Islamic State in Historical and Comparative Perspective. This is first and foremost due to the massive media profile of the ISIS movement…
Volume 2: The Evolution and Uses of the Stories of the Prophets (2017)
The study of qiṣaṣ al-anbiyāʾ, the Islamic tales of the prophets, has a distinguished pedigree in the Western academy, but much work remains to be done in the field. Although there have been numerous studies of individual prophetic figures over the last few decades, focused studies of specific works in the literary genre of qiṣaṣ have generally been lacking. Moreover, many studies of prophetic narratives tend to privilege exegetical works over other literary sources…

Volume 3: New Perspectives on Late Antique Iran and Iraq (2018)
When the Mizan initiative was founded, one of the core areas of research and publication we designated as central to the project was termed “Global Late Antiquity.” This topic represents a firm commitment to presenting and promoting scholarship that locates the rise and development of Islam in the context of the late ancient Near East and Mediterranean, particularly by focusing on the ways in which early Islam was heir to, and profoundly shaped by, that larger cultural, political, economic, and religious world…
Additionally, from 2015 to 2018 I served as General Editor of the book series associated with the Mizan initiative. The Mizan Series is published by Ilex Foundation in partnership with the Center for Hellenic Studies and distributed by Harvard University Press. Volumes in the series are listed here.
